GURLZ WITH CURLZ
GURLZ WITH CURLZ is a lifestyle magazine where Black women* share their perspectives and expertise in areas such as art, culture, politics, science and lifestyle. Founder and editor is communication designer Linda Nübling and together with her team she has made it her mission: to make diverse and complex Black realities visible and to give them constant space.
The publication appears twice a year, depicting personalities, topics and trends and thus recording Black German history for the future. She did the whole corporate identity, including the magazine design, exhibition design and concept as well as the design of the logo and website. the growing fro
“The Growing Fro” explores the question “Can I touch your hair?” and approaches this problematic issue through artistic expression. The installation is composed of different hair textures from Black women* and appears to float freely in space. Viewed from one side, it presents a large Afro made up of seemingly identical hair types—reflecting a common stereotype associated with afro hair. However, as the viewer walks around the piece, portraits of individual women* emerge, revealing the unique and diverse identities of Black women*. A simple yet striking visual mechanism. The long-term vision is for both the GURLZ WITH CURLZ community and the Growing Fro—quite literally—to grow from city to city. Each location involves the local community, fostering collaborations with regional projects and brands. All contributors become part of a nationwide project aimed at expanding and amplifying the Black network in German-speaking countries. Events have already taken place in Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart and Hamburg. In May 2023, the Growing Fro was showcased at Schauspiel Hannover.
